Victoria Eagles, Selects host Calgary Blues in Pre-Season Match-up

The three Victoria Eagles high-performance midget baseball teams will get a jump on their season this March, hosting the Calgary Blues Babe Ruth Team for six exhibition games.

Each of Victoria’s three midget teams – the Junior Premier Eagles, the Victoria Selects and the Premier Eagles- will play a double-header against the Calgary squad March 21 to 23, three weeks before opening day for the Premier Baseball League April 12.

“The Victoria Eagles are excited to be hosting these games against the Calgary Blues,” said Martin Winstanley, chair of the Eagles Baseball division of the Greater Victoria Baseball Association. “The Blues are a top-notch squad that will challenge our players to play their best. The series will be a treat for Victoria baseball fans.”

“After enduring our long winters with indoor training, our players are excited and extremely anxious to get on the field in the spring” said Miki Kawahara, Technical Director for Babe Ruth Calgary and head coach for the Calgary Blues winter travel team.  “This trip will give our players a jump start on the season and we know the level of competition in Victoria will be tremendous.”

All games will be played at Lambrick Park, with the first pitch each day at noon.

The Babe Ruth Calgary Baseball League is a city-based league for players aged 15 to 18. Celebrating 19 years of high-level baseball, the league is composed of five clubs, each with AA and AAA teams.

The league also forms three spring/summer travel teams (A, AA, and AAA), with players selected from member clubs for tournament play, including the Babe Ruth Northwest Regional Tournament qualifier for the Babe Ruth World Series (A and AAA teams).

This inaugural winter travel team is primarily composed of players selected from last year’s three spring/summer travel teams.

The Victoria Eagles and Selects coaching staff are looking forward to the opportunity to test this season’s teams against some of the finest players from Alberta. The Victoria Eagles Premier team are the 2013 PBL champions. The Victoria AAA Selects were the 2012 U18 League Champions.

“Victoria baseball fans have a full season of baseball to look forward to, starting with this pre-season match-up with the Calgary Blues and continuing right through to the Junior Premier Final Eight Championship and the BC Minor U18 Championship both hosted at Lambrick Park this August,” Winstanley says.
